Today was the day my body and brain teamed up to test my commitment. The cravings were loud, the mood swings were real, and my old habits kept whispering, “Just start over tomorrow.”
But I kept reminding myself: it’s better on the other side.
Day 5 Sugar Detox - Morning Check-In
Weight: 194.5 lbs Fasting Glucose (CGM): 110 mg/dL Sleep Readiness (Oura): 87 Sleep Quality (Oura): 82 Energy Level: 1 – very low, worst day since starting Mood: Irritable, moody, emotional swings Meal: 3 eggs over easy with cheese, 2 sausage patties
I stuck with a simple breakfast I know and enjoy. No energy for anything elaborate this morning.

Day 5 Sugar Detox - Afternoon Check-In
I am tired and hungry. The cravings are a constant thought. It would be so easy to give in and start later.
Glucose (CGM): 98 mg/dL Meal: Salmon with roasted Brussels sprouts and mashed parsnips Snacks: Apple slices with cashew butter
Lunch was satisfying, but as soon as I finished, the automatic urge for something sweet hit me hard. I chose apple slices instead, but mentally I still wanted more. A short walk helped distract my mind, and I even took a 15-minute nap to reset.
Day 5 Sugar Detox - Evening Check-In
Evenings are usually my danger zone, and tonight was no different. After dinner my brain went straight to: “Okay, where’s the sweet stuff?”
Glucose (CGM): 95 mg/dL Meal: Cheeseburger salad (spinach, cheese, mayo, onions, cherry tomatoes, bacon, pickles) – see recipe on our YouTube channel Snacks:
2 pieces sugar-free, low-carb, gluten-free bread with butter
6 apple slices with cashew butter
The cravings were relentless. Easily the toughest evening so far.
Day 5 Sugar Detox - Daily Recap
Glucose Range: 88 – 119 mg/dL Total Activity (Apple Watch): 3,083 calories Water: 180 oz Overall Energy: 3 – cravings dominating Overall Mood: My mood was all over the place. I was irritable, ready to give in, fighting my brain’s cravings, tired, just an internal battle raged. It was the worst day yet.
Overall Cravings: Highest since starting the detox
Why Day 5 Is the Hardest Day of the Sugar Detox
Day 5 Sugar Detox has been the hardest yet. Mentally and physically, this one pushed me. But the difficulty is also a sign that the body is shifting.
Here’s what’s happening behind the scenes:
Dopamine drops: Your brain is used to the reward of sugar and starts sending “Where is it?” signals.
Cravings spike: Not because you’re weak but because your brain wants the quick hit it is used to.
Insulin begins recalibrating: Your body is adjusting to fewer glucose spikes.
Fuel shift begins: You are transitioning from sugar-burning to fat-burning.
Habits get challenged: The autopilot routine of reaching for sweets after meals is being rewritten.
This is the peak of withdrawal for many people and that means you are moving in the right direction. Day 5 felt terrible but also deeply meaningful. This is the pivot point where your body learns a new normal.
If you’re here too, hang in there. You’re closer than you think. You absolutely can do this.
